Intro to TOOOL PWM

I think it's only fitting that the first post to what will hopefully turn into a great resource for lockpickers in the Southern Maine and NH area should be a brief tale of who we are and how TOOOL PWM came to be.

I'll start with me: Tom Williams (@1_tjw). I got my start lockpicking through my real job: InfoSec for Defense Industrial Base. I work as a contractor for DoD in the InfoSec space. One day on Twitter, it was brought up that there was no way for all of us (us being the InfoSec community) in Maine, NH and MA to get together and hang out without all the pressure of work, or cons. And the New England InfoSec Tweetup (#NEISTU) was born. With time, it morphed into GraniteSec, with a hosted page for our invites owned by one of our co-founders.

As I got more into everything InfoSec, I learned about lockpicking. It was like a veil of security had been lifted. I picked up Deviant Ollam's Practical Lock Picking and it all started to make even more sense. I knew how a lock worked, how it functioned, and how easy it was to manipulate and force open. I bought a pickset, and every lock I could find, and started picking them. All of a sudden one day, I felt that final click and tension gave out. The lock opened, because of something I did without a key. It's a feeling I'll never forget, and most of you know the feeling as well.

As time progressed with GraniteSec, we started bringing picks and locks. After meeting a few times and getting a core group, we decided to start working with TOOOL and become an officially recognized chapter. The idea of a meeting space never crossed our minds, since we were just meeting up whenever GraniteSec came around every few months. One day, a space clicked into place. A makerspace was being founded in Portsmouth, NH (Port City Makerspace), and they loved the idea of having us in. The founders had always been intrigued by lockpicking (and bumping) but never got too in depth with it.

So that's it. That's how TOOOL PWM came to be, and how we came to be at our meeting place. You can always reach us at chapter-pwm@toool.us or stop into one of our meetings (the first Saturday of every month at 2 PM). Hope to see you soon, and good pickings!
